What to write
What to write in your child's memory book at age 2
Two is the age of mispronounced words, fierce independence and enormous feelings. Their language explodes, and with it the funniest sayings you'll ever hear. Write them down this year — they correct themselves faster than you'd think.
Questions to answer this year
- What's their funniest mispronounced word?
- How do they show you they're cross?
- What book do they ask for again and again?
- What have they just learned to do by themselves?
- Who is their favourite person outside this house?
- What are they fearless about, and what makes them wary?
Milestones and moments to look out for
- Two-word sentences that suddenly make sense
- A word they say in their own special way
- Doing it themselves — shoes, spoon, stairs
- Their first real friendship or favourite playmate
- A favourite book read a hundred times
- Pretend play: feeding teddies, talking on the phone
- Big feelings, and what helps them calm down
- Their first haircut
Every child moves at their own pace — these are ideas for what to notice, not a checklist.
Things they might say
“I do it MYSELF.”
“Look, a hello-copter!”
“My tummy is singing” — when he's hungry
