What to write

What to write in your child's memory book at age 3

Three-year-olds are full of questions, stories and wonderfully wrong explanations of how the world works. Their imagination takes off and their sense of humour starts to show. This is the year to capture how they think, not just what they do.

Questions to answer this year

  • What question do they ask a hundred times a day?
  • What game do they invent when nobody is organising them?
  • What are they wearing constantly at the moment?
  • Who is their first real friend?
  • What did their first day away from you look like?
  • What have they said lately that stopped you in your tracks?

Milestones and moments to look out for

  • The endless “why?” questions — and their own answers
  • An imaginary friend or game
  • Starting nursery or preschool
  • Drawing people (with arms coming out of heads)
  • Telling their first jokes
  • A favourite song they sing on repeat
  • Learning to pedal, scoot or jump with both feet

Every child moves at their own pace — these are ideas for what to notice, not a checklist.

Things they might say

Example
“Why is the moon following our car?”
Example
“When I was big, I was a dinosaur.”
Example
“I'm not tired, my eyes are just resting.”
