What to write

What to write in your child's memory book at age 1

At one they're moving, pointing and starting to name the world. Personality arrives in full colour — likes, dislikes and opinions they can't yet explain. Their first words are worth writing down exactly as they come out.

Questions to answer this year

  • How did they get moving — shuffle, crawl, or straight to walking?
  • What was their first word, and who did they say it to?
  • What food do they reach for every single time?
  • What makes them belly-laugh?
  • Who lights them up the moment they walk in?
  • What did their first birthday look like?

Milestones and moments to look out for

  • First steps, and who they toddled towards
  • Their first words, quoted exactly
  • Pointing at everything and waiting for the name
  • A comfort toy or blanket that goes everywhere
  • Learning to wave, clap or blow kisses
  • Feeding themselves (mostly onto the floor)
  • Their first trip somewhere new

Every child moves at their own pace — these are ideas for what to notice, not a checklist.

Things they might say

Example
“Duck!” (about every bird, and one cat)
Example
“Nana nana nana” — her name for both bananas and Nana
Example
“Uh-oh,” right before dropping the spoon on purpose
