What to write
What to write in your child's memory book at age 8
At eight, their humour gets sharper and their interests deeper. They want more independence but still love family rituals. This is a lovely age to record their opinions, jokes and the small traditions that are yours.
Questions to answer this year
- What kind of friend are they?
- What have they got properly good at this year?
- Who do they miss when they don't see them?
- What have they argued their case about recently?
- What responsibility have they taken on for the first time?
- What makes them furious about the world?
Milestones and moments to look out for
- A skill they've practised and got good at
- The jokes and riddles they love telling
- Sleepovers or first nights away
- A family tradition they insist on keeping
- What they spend their pocket money on
- A book series they're devouring
- Standing up for a friend or for themselves
Every child moves at their own pace — these are ideas for what to notice, not a checklist.
Things they might say
“Why did the chicken cross the playground? To get to the other slide.”
“I'm not scared, I'm just being careful.”
“Can we do the pancake thing again? It's tradition.”
