What to write

What to write in your child's memory book at age 5

Five often means starting school — a huge step into a world that's partly their own. They come home with new words, new friends and news you'll only hear half of. Recording it now gives them the start of their own story.

Questions to answer this year

  • How did starting school go — for them and for you?
  • What are they brilliant at that nobody taught them?
  • Who do they call their best friend, and why?
  • What do they spend their free time doing?
  • What's the funniest thing they've said this year?
  • What are they frightened of, and how do they get past it?

Milestones and moments to look out for

  • Their first day at school, and how they felt about it
  • The friend whose name comes up every day
  • Starting to read their first words
  • Losing their first tooth
  • A school play, assembly or sports day
  • The thing they're proudest of learning
  • What they tell you about their teacher

Every child moves at their own pace — these are ideas for what to notice, not a checklist.

Things they might say

Example
“My teacher knows everything. Even about volcanoes.”
Example
“I didn't cry at school, I just had wet eyes.”
Example
“Today was a seven out of ten.”
