What to write

What to write in your child's memory book at age 16

Sixteen is a threshold — exams, choices and the first real steps towards adult life. They're nearly grown, and they'll soon be telling their own story. Record this year for them to read back, and add what you want them to know.

Questions to answer this year

  • What do you want to say to them as they start being properly independent?
  • What kind of person have they turned out to be?
  • Who will they carry with them from these years?
  • What are they choosing for themselves now?
  • What are they excited about for what comes next?
  • What's the last thing they said that made you proud?

Milestones and moments to look out for

  • Their sixteenth birthday and who was there
  • Exam results and what came next
  • Choosing a college, course, job or path
  • A first proper job or regular responsibility
  • Their circle of friends and what they do together
  • Something you've learned from them
  • What you want them to know as they head into adulthood

Every child moves at their own pace — these are ideas for what to notice, not a checklist.

Things they might say

Example
“I'm sixteen. I can make my own decisions.” (asks what to wear)
Example
“Remember when I was little and I thought…”
Example
“Thanks, Mum. For all of it.”
