What to write

What to write in your child's memory book at age 11

Eleven often brings the end of primary school and a big change ahead. They're straddling childhood and something new — one minute playing, the next very grown-up. Capture both sides; the playful one fades quickly.

Questions to answer this year

  • How are they changing as they leave primary school behind?
  • Who do they trust with the things they don't tell everyone?
  • What music are they playing on repeat?
  • What are they nervous about for the year ahead?
  • What's their sense of humour like now?
  • What first has this year brought?

Milestones and moments to look out for

  • The last year of primary school and leaving it
  • Choosing or visiting a new school
  • A friendship that's lasted years
  • Growing interest in music, fashion or how they look
  • A responsibility they've taken on
  • What they're excited — and nervous — about
  • A moment you saw who they're becoming

Every child moves at their own pace — these are ideas for what to notice, not a checklist.

Things they might say

Example
“Secondary school has lockers. LOCKERS.”
Example
“I'm too old for that… okay, one more go.”
Example
“Don't tell anyone I still like this song.”
